Bankwest Stadium to host The Wednesday League decider on 23 September

Bankwest Stadium will play host to one of the most unique community sporting events in the country with confirmation that the deciding fixture of The Wednesday League’s opening season will be played at the Stadium on Wednesday 23 September.

The Wednesday League, supported by Bankwest, is a first-of-its-kind grassroots football league created by, produced by, and starring Year 12 students from Sydney’s Northern Beaches.

The league is competed between two Year 12 teams – The Forest Originals, Year 12’s most avid soccer fans, and the Northern Sydney Select, a “best of the rest” team that includes students with a passion for football but whose main hobbies may have resided elsewhere.

The competition has gained support from some of Australia’s most prominent football voices and is unique in that it is filmed and broadcast with commentary to its YouTube channel and official sports streaming service partner SportsFlick.

“I use no added superlatives when I say this is a dream come true,” said Founder of The Wednesday League, Jude Dolan.

“Playing at the Stadium is an aim I’ve had since founding the League and to be able to decide the season there in such a style is going to be a day myself and the crew will never forget.”

Match commentary will be provided by one of Australia’s most iconic football voices – Simon Hill.

Bankwest Stadium has established itself as a safe-haven for sport during COVID-19 pandemic and will work with The Wednesday League and NSW Health to ensure all COVIDSafe protocols are followed.

With both teams level on points and wins after Game One at The Forest High School and Game Two at Cromer Park, the final day will consist of a standard 90-minute football match, with the potential to extend into extra time and/or penalties should the sides be drawn at the end of regulation.

The match will be filmed from multiple camera positions and be streamed on SportsFlick, with a small crowd of family and friends in attendance to witness the drama in person.

Playing at Bankwest Stadium means The Wednesday League will have the benefits of a full event day experience with the Stadium’s two big screens, PA system and all levels of LED in operation.

Following the conclusion of the match, there will be a brief post-match trophy and medal presentation.

Bankwest Stadium General Manager of Commercial, Shane Stoddard, says the Stadium is proud to be supporting such a unique community initiative.

“Bankwest Stadium has quickly become an integral part of the New South Wales sporting landscape and was designed to host any event, big or small,” said Mr Stoddard.

“We are delighted to have The Wednesday League here and help give what is a fantastic initiative a big platform for their feature match.”
